That's a Stretch

For years on end, the Islandwood Three-Day Member Guest Tournament's first day has been dominated by the team led by member and Islandwood High School Athletic Director- Dale Cunningham.

Each year, his foursome shows up at the first tee with a scant few minutes to "warm up". It has been a mystery as to why the Cunningham foursome is always late in arriving yet play great right out of the gate.

Well, this year we stumbled upon his foursome behind the 12th teebox a full one hour before their tee time. Mr. Cunningham was not very appreciative of the interruption as he put his squad through their pre-tee paces, but at least the mystery has been solved.

Slightly embarrassed, thoroughly heckled and unnerved, the Cunningham foursome tied for eighth place. It was their lowest finish since 1995.

Crow's Nest

Perfection was finally achieved at last week's 27th Annual Crow's Nest. This popular event draws a full field annually, and was won by the team of Strait, Wendt, Ball and Fine.

The format requires each team to assign one member to ride atop a golf cart as the "lookout" for the round. Scoring consists of best ball of three net, with one very important provision. For every hole that a team does not lose a golf ball, they may deduct one stroke from the net score for that hole. The other important wrinkle is the local rule whereby the time permitted to search for a possible lost ball is only two minutes rather than the maximum of five minutes as permitted by the Rules of Golf.

With team captain Nancy Ball perched as the lookout, her foursome managed to play all eighteen holes without losing a single golf ball and won the event by 5 strokes. It was the first time in the history of the tournament that a team never lost a ball and reaped the benefit of a full 18 strokes from par.

The Winning Pairing

Last week's 22nd Annual Islandwood Singles Tournament was once again a huge hit. The winning twosome bounced around the course with a very impressive 88.

The runner-up pair in the alternate shot format could only manage a 91. They fell flat after a 7 on the final hole.

Another highlight before dinner was the traditional jump into the pond next to the eighteenth to claim the winning prize - which as always - is a motorboat.

Chef Roland then provided a seafood buffet highlighted by his signature oyster bar. It featured six raw variations and two cooked dishes.

I hope to see a field of equal quality next year, and we wish this year's award winners all the best. And as always, we hope that this event brought these two even closer together.

Baby Blue Outing

This past Monday, we hosted the 14th annual "Baby Blue" Charity Golf Outing.

One player in each group must be dressed entirely in baby blue and have blue shafts on their irons.

The event sponsors multiple clothing drives for toddlers and newborns. Their sister charity "Pretty in Pink" has a similar event in March.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helping this great cause.

Fore Those in Kneed

Please come out and support Fore Those in Kneed.

We hold this event annually in support of the Islandwood General Hospital's Fuchs School of Special Surgery.

Foursomes compete in an 18 hole scramble. Shown above is last year's winning foursome that included event chairperson Skip Hopper (far left). Net proceeds went to the knee and hip replacement unit at the hospital.

Said Hopper. "It is nice to see how many members and guests are willing to kick in for such a good cause. It really is a joint effort, and we hope to duplicate or exceed last year's success."

Sharpshooters

Islandwood Community College celebrated its 20th annual Intercollegiate Sharpshooter Competition last weekend. Forty-four entrants from twenty-two different colleges vied for the title.

Second place finisher Edwin West (second from left) just narrowly missed the mark. Meanwhile, this year's champion Michael Peters (second from right) showed off his uncanny accuracy.

Congratulations to all, and not easy to do with hands behind your back.

A Beer, a Snickers, and a Zombie

Earlier this week, Islandwood held the 24th annual "FrankenBeerSnicker" tournament.

Things always get ugly (but fun) at this event. If you have never signed up for this , here is the main requirement: After every hole, each group must have one player eat a Snickers bar, one player chug a whole beer, and one walk like a zombie before teeing off on the next hole.

Thumbs up to the Packer foursome for taking home the trophy. They won on the fifth extra hole, and yes, stayed the night. See you all next year.

Daredevils & Superheroes

One of the nearby clubs, Crab Crossing Golf Club, asked us to pass this along.

They are hosting their 2nd annual Daredevil/Superhero tourney. They invite local golf clubs to field a foursome with at least one member dressed as a Daredevil or well-known Superhero.

It is a better ball of four event (net), but any person in each foursome who plays the round in an approved costume will be rewarded with an extra three (3) total handicap strokes.

Last year, Vincent Bagadona (shown above) won low net in the inaugural event.

Tee Shirt and Sneakers Outing

The 36th Annual Tee Shirt and Sneakers Outing results are in!

A fun time was had by all. The only requirement for each foresome is to have one player wear a tee shirt under their golf shirt as well as playing the entire round in running sneakers and cargo shorts.

The formidable team of Tiny, Coppertone, Beltless, and Sneaks won the event. Beltless also won closest to his pin.
